Sauna Blankets & Portables

Infrared blankets, fold-flat tent saunas and steam kits bring heat therapy into an apartment, since they plug into a normal outlet and stow under a bed. They cost a tenth of the price of a cedar hot room and still deliver a heat dose that leaves you soaked in sweat. Look for low-EMF heating and non-toxic materials where they touch skin, and buy one that gets hot enough to matter.

Sun Home sauna blanket review: the $499 blanket takes on HigherDOSE

Two blankets lead this category and $200 separates them. We weigh what each delivers on heat and EMF, plus how it's built, and pick one.

“The $499 Sun Home rolls out on a studio-apartment floor and gets hot enough to leave you soaked in forty minutes.”

Heat-shock proteins

163°F × 30 min

In a University of Iowa study, 30 minutes in a 163°F (73°C) sauna room raised blood heat shock protein 72 by about half on average, and the response varied widely from person to person.

The fix: A blanket or tent sauna brings heat sessions into an apartment, so you won't need a backyard.

What helps

A real dose, small footprint

A blanket or tent earns its keep only if it gets you to a real heat dose. Treat each session in one the way you'd treat a round in a sauna.

Portable saunas for renters: which kind fits your lease?

Each portable format is a compromise, so match yours to your floor plan. A blanket disappears under a bed and a tent comes closest to a sauna, while a steam kit is the only one that does humidity.

“A portable sauna delivers a real heat dose in 12 square feet on a normal outlet, and it's gone by the time the landlord visits.”

InsideThe blanket needs the least floor space · A fold-flat tent comes closest to a sauna · The steam kit is the only portable option with humidity

The science

Why sauna blankets & portables? The science

Infrared blankets, fold-flat tent saunas and steam kits bring heat therapy into an apartment, since they plug into a normal outlet and stow under a bed. Look for low-EMF heating and non-toxic materials where they touch skin, and buy one that gets hot enough to matter.

Common questions

Do sauna blankets work?
Yes, as a legitimate, convenient heat stimulus. A sauna blanket raises your core temperature and makes you sweat heavily, which is where heat adaptation starts. It can't replicate the 80–100°C air and löyly humidity of the cohort studies, so the headline mortality numbers belong to real saunas.
Should I buy a sauna blanket or a portable tent sauna?
Pick the tent if you'll do 30–45 minutes several times a week, since it's usually worth the extra space. A tent puts hotter air around your whole body, the way a sauna room does, and keeps your hands free. You'll pay less for a blanket and store it more easily, and you use it lying down.
