Portable saunas for renters: which kind fits your lease?
An apartment heat practice needs no backyard or 240V circuit. All three portable formats run on a standard outlet, and your floor plan decides between them.

Infrared blankets, fold-flat infrared tents and steam tent kits all run on a standard outlet and do the job properly, so any of them fits a lease. We compared them on floor space, how a session goes, the heat dose and your deposit. A blanket takes the least room, and a steam kit is the only one with humidity.
The blanket needs the least floor space
Rolled out on a bed or the floor, a blanket wraps you in far-infrared heat at up to about 175°F, and it stores flat afterward. It's the most discreet format, and no other lets you read during a session. You're lying still in your own humidity, though, so use a cotton insert and treat the top settings and 30–45 minutes as the protocol that counts.

A fold-flat infrared tent surrounds you in heated air with your hands free and your head out, or in on some models. That puts it closer to a cabin session than anything else an apartment allows. Setup takes minutes, and it needs about a square meter of floor while it's up.
SaunaSpace sells incandescent near-infrared tents at the high end, and Therasage's Thera360 is the practical mainstream pick. Clearlight's Curve Dome takes a lower-profile route for the same small room. Two infrared shells close over you on a PEMF mat while your head stays out on a pillow, and the pieces stack in a closet when you're done.

The steam kit is the only portable option with humidity
Steam kits pair a fabric tent with a plug-in steam generator. They're the only portable format that delivers wet heat, and they run at lower temperatures than infrared. Steam kits also cost the least of the three. Expect more drying after each session than the dry formats need.

- Can you get sauna benefits in an apartment?
- Yes. All three portable formats give you a real heat dose, with raised core temperature and heavy sweating, and that's where heat adaptation begins in the body. The long-term cohort evidence comes from traditional saunas, so hold the headline statistics loosely. Regular portable sessions are still a legitimate practice.
- Do portable saunas trip apartment breakers?
- Rarely. Sauna blankets draw 350–500W and tents or steam kits 900–1600W, all within a standard 15A circuit. Keep heavy appliances like a space heater or kettle off that circuit mid-session.
