When the crate arrives: what sauna delivery and assembly involve
A backyard sauna ships as a half-ton of pallets to your curb, and the driver's job ends there. Prep the site first and inspect every pallet before you sign.

Your sauna arrives as pallets that a freight driver leaves at the curb, and building it takes two people a Saturday for a barrel or a weekend for a cabin. We follow the sequence from order confirmation to first fire, starting with the site work that has to happen before the truck shows up. The paperwork you sign at the curb decides who pays for a cracked stave, and the freight company's obligations end earlier than you'd expect.
Freight delivery ends when the pallets reach your curb
Sauna kits ship LTL, short for less-than-truckload, on wooden pallets. A barrel or cabin kit typically weighs 1,000–2,500 lbs, split across one to three pallets. The standard service is curbside with a liftgate, and the driver lowers the pallets to the ground at the end of your driveway. Their job ends there, and they won't carry the kit up a slope or through a gate to the backyard.
Some kits come without the liftgate. Select Saunas ships Almost Heaven's Shenandoah, a 1,750 lb barrel kit, on a flatbed that can't use one, and it says to plan on three or four people or a rented forklift to unload it, or to buy the driver offload at checkout.
You'll get a phone call to schedule a delivery window, and an adult needs to be there. If moving half a ton of cedar twenty meters fills you with dread, some retailers sell white-glove upgrades that move it for you. A rented pallet jack does the job as well, and so do four friends and a pizza.

Walk the pallets before you sign the driver's paperwork, and count them against the packing list. Look for crushed corners and forklift punctures, and check for broken banding and water staining. Anything imperfect goes on the delivery receipt in specific words, such as "carton crushed on NE corner, possible panel damage." Signing clean legally means everything arrived intact, and carriers deny later claims against a clean receipt almost reflexively.
If the damage looks serious, you can refuse the affected pallet outright. Photograph everything before the truck leaves. Concealed damage you find while unpacking usually has to be reported within about five business days, so unpack promptly.
Pour the pad and book the electrician before delivery day
The classic mistake is letting the crate arrive before its pad exists. Pour or place the base first and make sure it's rated for the loaded weight, since a filled 8-person barrel with people in it approaches two tons. A level concrete pad works, and so do a compacted gravel bed and a paver foundation.
Check the path from the curb while you're at it, and measure gate widths against the longest packaged stave. Overhead branches and slope matter too. If you're going electric, book the electrician before delivery, because the lead time is real. We cover the 240V circuit in its own article.

A barrel kit is two-person work. The staves drop into cradle notches, and steel bands tension the barrel together. The pieces are heavy but manageable, and competent first-timers finish in 4–8 hours, so call it a Saturday with coffee breaks.
Cabin and cube kits run longer, usually a full weekend, because they add panelized walls and a roof membrane and use more fasteners. The manufacturers' time estimates on product pages assume you've done it before, so add half again. Some brands sell installation outright. Nootka's FAQ sends a builder with the barrel to buyers around Vancouver and up the Sea to Sky corridor, and there the build becomes a line item.

Install the heater last and run one burn-in session
The heater goes in after the room stands. Take the wall-mount heights and clearances from the manual, and leave the electrical hookup to your electrician. Never splice it yourself.
Wash the stones and stack them loosely so air can move through the pile. Then run the first burn-in session as the manual directs, with the room ventilated. Factory oils and dust need one hot cycle to cook off, and the smell is what you'd expect.

- Will the delivery driver bring the sauna to my backyard?
- No. Standard LTL freight delivers a sauna curbside only, and the liftgate gets the pallets to the ground at the street or driveway entrance. Moving them further is on you. Some retailers sell white-glove delivery that brings the pieces to the install site, and it's worth real money if you lack helpers.
- What if the crate arrives damaged?
- If your sauna crate arrives damaged, note the specific damage on the delivery receipt before you sign and photograph everything. Report it to the retailer immediately. You can refuse a badly damaged pallet. A clean signature legally says everything arrived intact, and carriers lean on it to deny claims.
- How long does it take to assemble a barrel sauna?
- Two reasonably handy adults typically finish a barrel sauna kit in 4–8 hours. Cabin and cube kits usually take a full weekend. Hooking up the heater is separate work for a licensed electrician.
- Do I need a crane or special equipment?
- No. A sauna kit almost never needs either, since its pieces are designed to be two-person carryable. A rented pallet jack or hand truck helps with the curb-to-site move. Pre-assembled saunas are the exception and may need equipment, which is why most ship as kits.
