Infrared vs. traditional sauna: which one should you actually buy?

The niche's most-argued question, settled by evidence and use case. Traditional saunas own the long-term health data; infrared owns convenience and cost. Here's how to pick.

Ask ten sauna owners which is better and you'll get ten confident, contradictory answers. The honest reply is that they're different tools. Traditional Finnish saunas heat the air to 80–100°C and carry essentially all of the long-term epidemiological evidence. Infrared cabins heat your body directly at 45–60°C, cost less to buy and run, and plug into a normal outlet — which is why many owners use them far more often. This guide sorts the trade-offs by what you're optimizing for.

What the health evidence actually says

Here's the part the infrared marketing tends to skip: the headline sauna longevity findings — 50% lower fatal cardiovascular disease, 61% lower stroke risk, 66% lower dementia risk at 4–7 sessions a week — come from the Finnish KIHD cohort, which studied traditional saunas. Infrared has its own literature, but it's younger and smaller: far-infrared (Waon) therapy has moved real endpoints in heart-failure and cardiovascular-risk trials. So if your decision hinges on the strongest long-term outcome data, traditional wins on evidence quality. If it hinges on getting a genuine, repeatable heat dose into a small space, infrared is entirely legitimate.

Heat, sweat, and how each one feels

A traditional sauna is a wall of enveloping heat and, when you ladle water on the stones, a rolling wave of löyly steam. It's intense, social, and fast — you're done in 15–20 minutes. Infrared is a milder, longer experience: the air stays breathable, so 30–45 minutes is normal, and the sweat comes on gradually. People who find 90°C overwhelming often stick with infrared precisely because they can tolerate it daily.

Installation, cost, and running expense

This is where infrared pulls ahead for most homes. Many far-infrared cabins run on a standard 120V outlet, assemble in an afternoon, and need no plumbing or ventilation work. Traditional electric saunas almost always require a dedicated 240V circuit installed by an electrician, plus proper venting. Purchase prices overlap, but the far-infrared entry point is lower — you can be in a real cabin under $2,500.

If you want the traditional experience

For löyly, stones, and the full Finnish protocol, you're choosing a hot-rock sauna — indoor or out. Barrel saunas heat efficiently for backyards; indoor cabins put the heat ten steps from the couch. These are the models the cohort research was effectively built around.

If you want infrared convenience

For daily, low-friction sessions — especially in an apartment or a spare bedroom — a full-spectrum or far-infrared cabin is the pragmatic pick. Look for third-party-measured low EMF and enough panels to actually reach a sweat.

Is infrared or traditional better for cardiovascular health?
The strongest long-term evidence — the 20-year KIHD cohort — is from traditional saunas, so on evidence quality traditional leads. Far-infrared has promising but smaller clinical trials (notably Waon therapy for heart failure). For most healthy people the more important variable is frequency, and whichever type you'll use 4–7 times a week is the one that will help you most.
Which gets hotter?
Traditional, by a wide margin: 80–100°C air versus 45–60°C in infrared. But infrared heats your body directly, so you sweat heavily despite the lower air temperature — it just takes longer.
Which is cheaper to run?
Infrared, generally — lower wattage and lower temperatures mean less energy per session, and many plug into a standard outlet. That said, even a traditional 8 kW electric heater costs well under a dollar per session at average US electricity rates.
