Wood-fired or electric? Choosing your sauna's engine

One is a ritual with a chimney; the other is heat on a schedule. The real trade-offs — cost, control, code, and character — behind the most consequential checkbox on the order form.

Every outdoor sauna configurator ends at the same fork: wood-burning stove or electric heater. It reads like a detail; it's actually the biggest determinant of how — and how often — you'll bathe. Here's the decision, taken seriously.

The case for electric

Frequency. The cohort data rewards 4–7 sessions a week, and nothing serves frequency like flipping a switch — or tapping an app — and stepping into a hot room 45 minutes later while dinner's still cooking. Modern units with Wi-Fi or LTE controllers preheat on your commute. The costs: a dedicated 240V circuit installed to code, and a running cost that's genuinely small — well under a dollar a session at average US rates.

The case for wood

Character and independence. A wood stove needs no electrician, no permit for wiring, no grid — which makes it the answer for cabins, lakesides, and anywhere trenching power is a project. The fire is also, frankly, the point for many bathers: tending it is the decompression. Budget 45–60 minutes of heat-up, a code-compliant chimney with proper clearances, and a few dollars of firewood per session.

Heat quality and the tie-breaker

Purists claim wood heat feels softer; blind to labels, what they're feeling is usually stone mass and humidity, both achievable either way. So let the tie-breaker be honest logistics: if your sauna is ten steps from the house and you want near-daily sessions, go electric. If it's a destination — a lake, a cabin, a ritual — the stove earns its tending.

Common questions

Is a wood-fired sauna hotter than electric?
Not inherently — both reach the same 80–100°C range. Perceived differences usually come down to stone mass, humidity, and ventilation rather than the fuel. A big-stone electric tower and a wood stove can feel remarkably similar.
Can I convert between wood and electric later?
Often yes on the room side — many barrel and cabin models accept either — but the infrastructure differs: a chimney penetration for wood, a dedicated 240V circuit for electric. Decide before you order; retrofitting either is doable but costs more than choosing right the first time.
