Can you wear a WHOOP (or Apple Watch, or Oura) in the sauna?
Short answer: briefly, yes — but you're taking the device outside every manufacturer's rated temperature, and the numbers it gives you back will be strange. What the heat does to your tracker, and to its data.

It's a fair question, and a common one: you've built the heat habit, you track everything else, so can the tracker come into the sauna? The honest answer has two halves. Physically, a short session usually won't kill the device — plenty of people do it. But a traditional sauna at 80–100°C, and even an infrared cabin at 45–60°C, sits at or beyond the temperature range these devices are actually rated for, and both the hardware and the data pay a small price. Here's the real picture, device by device.
The heat is outside every device's spec
Wrist bands and watches are generally rated to operate up to about 40°C (104°F) ambient; the Oura ring publishes the most generous window at roughly 52°C (125°F) and, notably, is the one maker that explicitly cautions about saunas. A traditional sauna blows past all of those, and even a milder infrared cabin brushes or exceeds the wrist-device limit. Going over spec rarely means instant failure — it means accelerated wear: batteries degrade faster when hot, adhesives and bands soften, and repeated thermal cycling is hard on any sealed electronic. So it's your device's longevity at stake far more than your safety.
Why the readings go haywire
Even when the hardware survives, the data gets weird, and it's worth knowing why so you don't panic at your recovery score. Optical heart-rate sensors (the green lights on a wrist) rely on steady blood flow and good skin contact; in the heat you're vasodilated, sweaty, and sitting still, which is close to the worst case for an optical reading — expect jumpy or inflated heart rate. Any skin-temperature sensor will simply peg high, because it's reading sauna air, not your core. On WHOOP that can distort strain and skin-temp trends; on Oura it can knock a night-based reading if you sauna near bedtime. The device isn't broken — it's honestly reporting an environment it wasn't designed to measure.
How to do it without wrecking the device or the data
If you want to wear it anyway: keep sauna sessions short, wipe the device dry the moment you step out (sweat plus heat is the corrosive combination), and never leave it sitting on a hot bench or in a hot car afterward — a device baking untethered gets hotter than one on your cooling skin. Then read the numbers correctly: treat sauna-session heart rate as light-cardio noise, not a real workout, and ignore single-session skin-temp spikes. The signal that matters from heat isn't any one session — it's the multi-week trend of resting heart rate drifting down as you adapt, which is exactly what a tracker is good at once you stop over-reading the hot minutes.
The device-by-device short version
Oura ring: mechanically the most sauna-tolerant (highest rated temperature, nothing to snag), but Oura itself suggests removing it in very hot sessions, and it conducts heat to your finger — take it off if it feels hot to the touch. WHOOP: the band survives short sessions fine, but expect skin-temperature and strain to read oddly; dry the band afterward. Apple Watch and similar smartwatches: the lowest rated ceiling of the group and a screen and glue you're stressing — the most reason to leave this one in the changing room. Chest straps: if you genuinely want accurate sauna heart rate, an electrical chest strap reads better than any optical wrist sensor in the heat — though it, too, is out of spec.
