The cold plunge tubs worth buying (and the one number that decides it)
Chiller or ice? 37°F or 50°F? The cold plunge market has quietly split into four price tiers that solve genuinely different problems. What separates them, and which tub belongs in your yard.

The cold plunge market matured fast, and it did so around one component: the chiller. Everything else — acrylic or thermowood, barrel or box, inflatable or fixed — is a preference. The compressor is the decision, because it determines the only two things that actually govern whether you'll still be plunging in six months: how cold the water holds, and how quickly it gets back there after you climb out. Here's how the tiers break down, and where the honest value sits.
Passive tubs: cheapest to own, hardest to keep
A passive tub is a well-insulated vessel and nothing else — you chill it with ice. Redwood's Alaskan is the archetype: a 130-gallon thermowood barrel with a liner, sized for one person at full immersion, no electricity anywhere. The appeal is real, and so is the arithmetic. In winter, in a cold climate, a passive tub is close to free and genuinely pleasant. From roughly May onward you are buying bags of ice several times a week, and that is the point at which most passive owners either stop plunging or start pricing chillers. Buy passive if your winters are long, your budget is firm, or you want to find out whether the habit sticks before spending five figures.
The entry chiller: cold on a standard outlet
The first powered tier is where the habit usually survives, and Plunge Air defines it: an inflatable ~105-gallon tub that sets up in about fifteen minutes and pairs with a compact chiller holding 39°F on an ordinary 110V/15A outlet. Two things matter here. It is packable, which makes it the only serious option for renters and anyone who may move. And 39°F is genuinely cold — the difference between 39°F and the 37°F of the tier above is far smaller than the difference between 39°F and an ice-dependent tub in July. The compromise is the shell: inflatable walls are less comfortable to lean against and won't last like acrylic.
The standard: a real chiller and a real shell
The flagship Plunge pairs a 105-gallon acrylic body with the Pro Chiller Gen 2, which reaches 37°F and — the specification that actually matters — pulls heat at up to 12°F per hour. Recovery rate is the number nobody markets and everybody feels: a tub that takes all day to return to temperature is a tub that only one person uses, once. Built-in filtration and ozone sanitation matter just as much, because the maintenance burden is what quietly kills cold-plunge habits. Like the rest of the range it runs on a dedicated 120V/15A circuit, so no electrician is required. This is the default recommendation for most buyers.
When to pay for the top tier
Two reasons justify going further, and neither is simply wanting colder water. The first is contrast: Plunge's All-In Gen 2 both chills to 37°F and heats to 104°F in the same tub, holding cold even in 120°F ambient heat — which is the whole Nordic cycle in one vessel, and the right answer for a hot climate or a patio with no room for two units. The second is throughput. Sun Home's Cold Plunge Pro runs a 1HP chiller down to 28°F across 150 gallons with 20-micron filtration, ozone and UV — specification aimed at a household or gym where several people plunge daily and the water never gets a rest. If you're one person plunging once a day, this tier is buying you headroom you'll never use.
What to check before you buy anything
Four things, in order. Circuit: nearly every chiller here runs on a standard 120V outlet, but it should be a dedicated one — sharing with a freezer will trip it. Recovery rate, not just minimum temperature: ask how fast it pulls degrees per hour, because that's what determines whether two people can plunge back to back. Sanitation: ozone or UV plus a real sediment filter, or you'll be draining and refilling a heavy tub far more often than you expect. And siting: a full plunge weighs upward of 1,000 lb, so it wants a pad or a deck rated for it, and it wants to be close enough to the sauna that you'll actually cross between them in February.

- Do I need a chiller, or is ice good enough?
- Ice works, and in a cold climate a passive tub is genuinely viable through winter. The problem is summer: from late spring you're buying ice several times a week, which is both the cost and the friction that ends most cold-plunge habits. If you know you want this year-round, the chiller pays for itself in convenience long before it pays for itself in ice.
- How cold does a cold plunge actually need to be?
- Colder isn't automatically better. The commonly used range is roughly 50°F down to the high 30s, and most of the adaptation response is available across that whole band — what changes is how long you can stay in. A tub holding 39°F is not meaningfully worse than one holding 37°F for a single user; the sub-30°F capability of the top tier is about recovering fast under heavy shared use, not about a better plunge.
- What electrical work does a cold plunge need?
- Less than a sauna. Every tub covered here runs on a standard 120V circuit at 12–15A — no 240V hardwire, no panel work. What it does want is a dedicated circuit rather than one shared with other appliances, and a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet if it's sited outside.
- Can I use one tub for both hot and cold?
- Yes, if you buy for it. The All-In Gen 2 chills to 37°F and heats to 104°F in the same vessel, which makes true contrast therapy possible in a single footprint. It's the right call where space or climate rules out running a plunge alongside a sauna — though a dedicated hot room and a dedicated cold tub is still the better experience if you have room for both.
